Victor 10-Inch Double-Sided Acoustical Records
1908-1925

This page covers the 17000 series (actually a continuation of the 16000s) from 17000 to 17999 with issue dates ranging from 1911 to 1916. Earlier and later issues can be found on other pages. Pricing remained at 75¢, but quality in the studio started to suffer. The sound became somewhat boxy, especially starting in 1914 when a new "Bat-Wing" label design replaced the older "Patents" one. Bat-Wing Victors would become known for that sound. The shellac remained decent, but World War I would soon take a toll on that too. Re-issues of earlier single-sided selections became rare since the catalog was now large enough to provide sufficient variety. There was a craze for dance music during these years, often performed by military bands (usually in name only). Studio musicians like Billy Murray and Henry Burr, Vaudeville and even Minstrelsy also remained popular.
