Edison Diamond Discs
1912-1929

This page covers the 52000 series from 52000 to 52651 with issue dates ranging from 1927 to 1929. Earlier issues can be found on other pages. The 50000 series was the popular music and performance tier. It had the lowest price starting at $1.00 in 1912, increasing slightly over the years, and was the best-selling of the tiers.

Thomas Edison resisted electrical recording until 1927 with Catalog Number 52089, relying on his bad hearing and judging issues by other labels and experiments in his own laboratory as too distorted. After the introduction of electrical recording to the Diamond Disc, the technical quality of the resulting issues was arguably problematic. Using General Electric's equipment instead of the Western Electric system combined with the continued use of the vertical-cut, recordings came out a little less natural than possible and muddier because of the high base. However, they were still meant to be played with an acoustic reproducer and modern processing/correcting can make them sound quite good. Both versions are presented for the electrical recordings below. Yet the public still favored celebrity and equipment standardization, two boats the Edison Label was too late getting aboard and it folded just days after the stock market crash in 1929.
