Arto Records
1919-1923

The Arto Company was incorporated in Orange, New Jersey in October 1919 with a studio in New York City, but also leased many masters from and to other second-tier companies. It was part of The Standard Music Roll Company, makers of Arto and Perfection piano rolls. It used a/the universal-cut to make its records playable on both lateral and vertical-playing phonographs but audio quality suffered in the process. It had a black label series for popular music and a red label for classical and ethnic music. Its A&R was less than impressive but attempted a remedy by entering the race market with blues singers Lucille Hegamin and Alice Lester Carter. The former's records sold well, especially when leased to several over labels, but the company was already in financial trouble by mid-1921 and closed by 1923.
